The harbour of San Francisco

- called Port of San Francisco
- was for long time the biggest and the busiest harbor of the whole American west-coast
- piers were to small as for the freighters → goods were brought to Oakland
- piers were getting sold and then renew
- Today there are just a few of the old piers and the centerpiece of the port left.

Fisherman‘s Wharf

- developed in 1900, when Italian fishermen there settled
- Since 1950’s it’s a popular tourist area
- Harbour borough in San Francisco
- Principal magnet of the tourism in San Francisco
- Many sights are in Fisherman’s Wharf
- The ferries to Alcatraz start from Fisherman’s

Alcatraz

- in the middle of the San Francisco bay
- In the past it was used as fort and then as a maximum-security prison .
- today it has become a tourism attraction
- Made up of sandstone; 500 meters long; up to 41 meters high; area of 85.000 m²
- in 29 years just 14 breakout tries.
- 11 th June 1962 the convicts Frank Morris and the both brothers John and Clarence Anglin disappeared
- closed on the 21 th March 1963

Golden Gate Bridge

- On the 8 th place of the longest bridges in the world
- Landmark of San Francisco
- Was built from the 5 th January 1933 until the 19 th April 1937
- has costed 35 Million dollars
